Technology for efficiently removing hazardous gases : Tanaka's Group Video Clips. Duration : 3.73 Mins.

At Keio Techno-Mall in December 2009, Professor Tanaka from the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry, in Keio Universitys Department of Applied Chemistry, exhibited technology for efficiently removing hazardous gases. Q. In the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry, we do research on removing various hazardous gases, mainly from the air. Q. To remove hazardous gases, the conventional method is treatment by passing air through filters or absorbent materials. We remove gases efficiently by using, not filtration, but a property of gases themselves, which is that they diffuse easily. The Lab has developed technology for removing hazardous gases using the diffusion scrubber method. The diffusion scrubber method is a unique way of collecting gases. It uses the difference in diffusion coefficient between gases and particles to separate and collect the gases. Together with businesses, the Lab has utilized the diffusion scrubber method to develop an air purifier using porous Teflon membranes. Q. Theres a porous Teflon membrane on both sides of this cell. It has numerous pores just 0.4 microns in size, which arent visible to the eye. Gases pass through the membrane into the cell. The cell is very thin, but it contains water or a removal solution. The way it works is that gases pass through the pores and are absorbed. In fact, air flows through the spaces between lots of these cells. So hazardous gases in the air diffuse through the pores and get absorbed by the removal solution in ...
