The best types of charcoal to use are soft woods but different woods can serve different purposes. soft woods such as Pine, Aspen, Ash, Willow, Balsa, Grapevine, and Maple are good for fast burning compositions such as black powder. Hard wood charcoals such as Oak, Mesquite, and Hickory are good for slow burning compositions such as willow, as Hard wood compositions burn with dim, dense orange sparks.
