Fire starter magnesium, activated carbon, salt water battery cell

Fire starter magnesium, activated carbon, salt water battery cell Video Clips. Duration : 9.95 Mins.

Very old technology but interesting effects with a fire starter magnesium block, activated carbon, saturated salt water solution (electrolyte), and a womens nylon hose insulator; running a couple low voltage and current Radio Shack motors. Once operational; pressing down on the magnesium increases the voltage and current to any connected devices due to the increased contact surface within the activated graphite and salt water electrolyte plus battery cell terminal. The copper wire terminal was replaced with a solid graphite piece placed in the activated carbon, that offers no oxidation and loss of voltage/current which the copper wire is exposed too. The battery cell is considered a very short term unit, as the salt accumulates on the magnesium over time and reduces the voltage, current output. At the same time the reduction of salt in the water (electrolyte) reduces the output. The nylon hose somewhat reduces water evaporation into the air while acting as a insulator, and, the thinness allows a greater degree of voltage and current to occur. Even after ~ a couple hours of use, the salt buildup on the magnesium contact will be very significant. The oxidation of the magnesium will also be quite obvious. CAUTION: The magnesium releases gases, hydrogen and a smaller measure of chlorine gas.
