A few quick tips that work - how to cure bogwood and drift wood quickly - prevent that brown staining in your aquarium. Bog-wood, also known as morta is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannin dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilization of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.

DIY aquarium overflow and sump filter

This is my DIY aquarium overflow and sump filter system. Gus, my Oscar, is pretty chilled out at the moment, getting used to the new setup and added water. My aquarium is 55 gallons. Typically, I probably wouldn't use a system like this on a 55 gallon tank, but Oscar's have very large bioloads and more water and mechanical filter media you can include in your system, the better. I do also use a marineland magnum 350 canister filter to handle the deeper level of the tank. I prefer to not use activated carbon unless i need it, so neither my sump filter stack nor my canister filter contain carbon. 55 gallons isn't actually much room for a single Oscar so it's also nice to clear out as much room in the tank as possible. Being able to put the heater in the sump saves a little space. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions regarding anything in the vid. I'd also be thrilled to hear your thoughts or suggestions on how I could improve the setup or potential problems you foresee with this.

It has the ability to last up to 5 years when properly maintained, so that means once a month, take it out of your filter and rinse it off. This activated carbon reduces unwanted contaminates and reduces deadly pollutants from aquarium water. High capacity allows for smaller amounts to be used, especially if filter size is limited. The Fluval G3 and G6 are the newest entries in the Fluval line of external canister filters. They are some of the most advanced filters on the planet, with a computer controlled screen that provides an abundance of information to the advanced aquarist. The system is modular, with a very fine mechanical cartridge screen and then a chemical filter cartridge. There are separate screens for freshwater and saltwater available. Both the mechanical cartridge and chemical system are easily removed for maintenance without having to disassemble or remove the filter frm its location. My DIY Water Change Filter System. More or less 3 five gallon buckets with holes drilled in them, placed into a tub with a pump at the bottom. The top bucket has about 6-8 inches of filter material, the middle bucket has about 4-5 inches of activated carbon and other packs of chemical filters. The bottom bucket has only about 8 holes drilled about an inch up from the bottom, so the water squirts out the sides. Run your water through this and pump it back into the tank. OF COURSE you still need to do water changes, but this helps cut down the number you have to do. Typically I still add 2 - 4 gallons when I use this simple because you can not get all of the water out of the tub.

Since then I have had to remove all live plants due to fish eating them. They just wouldn't let them grow. I also had a bout with ick and lost several fish over time. That was ok because I wanted to add better fish. So this is the new and improved aquarium. This tank is a 20 gallon, high with 2 Aquaclear outboard or hanging filters. One filter is a #70 or 300 gallons per hour filtration and it is set up like a normal filter with carbon, ammo carb, and filter medium. The second filter is a #50 or a 150 gallon per hour filtration. This smaller unit is set up with activated charcoal only. This is like a booster for clarity and toxins. This tank is about 2 and 1/2 years old and has been moved once. With a plecostomus and catfish, the tank is literally self cleaning. The filters are cleaned and changed once every month and that is all. Very easy maintenance. The light is a standard fluorescent tube that is left on for daylight simulation and turned off for night mode. The light is set on a timer. A few of the fish are over 2 years old and have been with the tank since the beginning. This 38 gallon tank houses a Flame Angelfish, a Blue Tang, an Ocellaris Clown, a Blenny, a Cleaner Shrimp, and several Hermit Crabs. The live rock has been in this tank at least fifteen years, so the purple coralline algae has had a chance to almost completely encrust the rock. Filtration includes a Bak-Pak skimmer hanging on the back of the tank, and a small power filter with activated carbon. Evaportive water loss is replaced with Kalkwasser.
