These are a couple of different cells made using some activated carbon, and fresh wet beach sand, placed in the 3/4" by 3" aluminum tubes, or on a piece of aluminum strip 1/2" by 3". The brass triangular plate is the positive pole, and the aluminum is the negative. Carbon/ beach sand mix is the electrolyte. 1.250 volts, 60mA output, unloaded, just using plain table salt added to the water, to wet the cells.

At a recent Green and Growing event in PA, Waste Management's Scott Perin showed students what the company's GCSL wastewater process entails. Wastewater is created from rain passing through the trash. The raw wastewater is collected on top of the liner system in sumps (engineered low points). The raw wastewater is pumped to storage tanks for equalization. The wastewater enters the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and passes through a primary clarifier. The primary clarifier removes much of the solids from the wastewater. The pH of the wastewater is now adjusted prior to entering the biological treatment tank. GCSL uses a powdered, activated carbon treatment (PACT) system for the biological treatment of the wastewater. The wastewater is mixed with biological solids (sludge) in an 110000-gallon tank where it is mixed and alternates between being aerated and mixed without air. Naturally occurring microorganisms present in the biomass oxidize the nutrients in the wastewater. After several hours of mixing and aeration the contents of the tank are allowed to settle. The biomass and fine solids settle and separate from the treated wastewater. The treated wastewater is then drained off of the top of the tank and sent to an equalization tank. The treated effluent from the PACT system can be sent to a publicly owned treatment plant for final treatment or treated onsite.
