After you fill the filter tube with activated charcoal and alumina, pour some water through it to clean off any residual powders from manufacturing, shipping and handling before you mount it for use. Use food grade filter media. I filled the filter tube with activated charcoal on the bottom half and activated alumina on the top half. Activated alumina is what Berkey uses uses in their fluoride, heavy metal removal filter. I kind of got tired of filling my current filtration system several times a day and paying an arm and a leg for filters. Almost forgot to mention to add a fine plastic screen at the bottom of the filter tube in the threaded end piece.
